Concord selects mayor, seats new councilmembers
At the Tuesday, Dec. 7 Concord City Council meeting, Councilmember Laura Hoffmeister was selected by fellow members to serve as mayor for 2011. She was reelected to the City Council in the November election and will be serving her fourth term as mayor. Hoffmeister, City Treasurer Tom Wentling and newly elected Councilmembers Ron Leone and Tim Grayson were sworn in for terms of office ending in 2014.
Leone was selected to serve as vice mayor. Grayson will serve as Redevelopment Agency chair and Bill Shinn will serve as vice chair.
Fellow councilmembers and the community said farewell to Mayor Guy Bjerke, Vice Mayor Helen Allen and Councilmember Mark Peterson. Bjerke and Allen did not run for reelection in November. Peterson, a 15-year City Council veteran, was successful in his bid to become Contra Costa County's next District Attorney. He announced that he will resign from the City Council effective January 1, 2011 to start his new job. His election leaves a vacant seat on the Council. Councilmembers will consider recommendations for filling his seat at the meeting on Dec. 14.
Bjerke has served on the City Council since 2007 when he was appointed to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Councilmember Michael Chavez. Allen, first elected to the City Council in 1993, was applauded for her 17 years of service to the community.
