Concord selects Hoffmeister as mayor, Leone as vice mayor

At the Tuesday, December 1 Concord City Council meeting, Mayor Tim Grayson turned over the gavel to Laura Hoffmeister, who was selected by fellow councilmembers to serve as mayor for a two-year term (2016 - 2017). The council selected Ron Leone to serve as vice mayor for a one-year term (2016). Hoffmeister, Leone and Councilmembers Edi Birsan and Dan Helix thanked Grayson for his two-year service as mayor.

Earlier in the evening, Grayson presented Sandra Scherer of the Monument Crisis Center with the Mayor's 2015 Community Service Award, commending her and her organization for assisting thousands of families each year with emergency food supplies, health clinics, and programs for youth and seniors.

Grayson, on behalf of the full council, also conferred upon Helix the title of "Mayor a Priori" in recognition of his "unwavering dedication, unquestionable ethics, utmost loyalty, and over 50 years of extensive contributions to the Concord community."

Hoffmeister, a lifelong Concord resident, has served on the City Council since 1997. Hoffmeister is a past recipient of Contra Costa Women's Hall of Fame Community Leadership Award. She serves on the Board of Directors of the John Muir/Mt. Diablo Community Health Fund and is active in her support of the various veterans and support organizations including VFW Post 1525 - Clayton Valley, Blue Star Moms and Diablo Valley Veterans. She formerly served on the boards of the Concord Historical Society, American Association of University Women, and is a graduate of Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce's "Leadership Concord" Academy. She holds a BS degree in City and Environmental Planning from the University of California, Davis.

Leone was elected to the City Council in 2010 and re-elected in 2014. Leone served 35 years in education as a high school teacher and principal. He holds a BA and teaching credential from San Francisco State and an MA and Administrative credential from St. Mary's college in Moraga.
