Lane closure Sunday for pruning of large tree

Residents should expect delays on Clayton Road near Chestnut Avenue on Sunday, Feb. 21 between 6 a.m. and noon. During that time, the large eucalyptus tree in front of the El Monte Shopping Center will be trimmed to reduce the possibility of a tree branch failure.

Professional arborists and specialized operators will work to prune the tree using a crane and other heavy equipment. The project will temporarily close the western entry and exit and several parking stalls in the El Monte Shopping Center. Traffic will be reduced to one inbound and one outbound lane on Clayton Road for the duration of the project.

In July 2015, City of Concord Public Works engaged the services of a professional arborist to review the health and condition of the tree. The arborist concluded that the tree is stable but recommended moderate pruning to reduce the height of the tree and lesser pruning to reduce the length of some horizontal limbs, which are most failure-prone.
